Is there a way to give each (automation) newsletter an automatic edition number?

Edition number doesn't look good for new subscribers joining the list.

You can include date, day, week, month, year or combination of these for newsletters.

For instance, if you sending monthly newsletters, you can include month and year. For weekly newsletters, you can include week numbers (1 to 52).
